Some recent crafts

I know I have been doing a horrible job keeping up with this blog. Summer got away from us and went by entirely too fast. Now that school has started for both kids (that's right, M is now in preschool, oh my!) and we have settled into our routines, I am starting to add in some fun and educational crafts into our daily/weekly routine. Thanks to my good friend Missy for referring me to the site notimeforflashcards.com. That site is LOADED with awesome ideas! I don't think I will ever need another site to find ideas from again! So here are a few things we have done the last two weeks.

This one I found on no time for flash cards but I changed it a little bit. I cut the pumpkins out of orange construction paper instead of the foam pipe stuff they used. While M was at school I got this ready to go. I drew and cut out 26 pumpkin shapes and labeled each with each letter of the alphabet. Then I drew three green squiggly lines for vines on a piece of paper. I added some leaves and then wrote each letter in random order along the vines. Then M had to match each letter and glue the pumpkin on. This took some time and she didn't have the attention span to do it all at once so we did in three different segments. She is getting better at recognizing her letters but still doesn't know every one. She was still able to do this even if she didn't know the letter name. I used all capital letters but for older kids you could have them match capital letter with the lower case letter. You could also do just lower case letters. I plan to do it again with lower case letters but this time I am going to have her put apples on a tree. It could also be done with leaves. There are tons of possibilities for this one!

Here is a fun one that I did with E. M was really only interested in wadding up all of the pipe cleaners. Take four pipe cleaners of whatever color or combination you like (E loves Halloween colors so they were pretty fitting). Then fold in half to find the middle and tie them in a knot. The knot makes the body. Then bend the legs however you like. You could also wrap another pipe cleaner around the middle to make the body a bit bigger. We chose not to.

M has shown an interest in helping in the kitchen so I decided to make it a weekly activity to let her make/help make a special lunch, something different than sandwiches and leftovers. So yesterday we made homemade pizza with our friend E.

E enjoyed eating the cheese that was left over.

Here is a fun one we did today. I emptied out our paint supply box and put a piece of paper in the bottom. Then I put a few drops of paint on the paper, added some bouncy balls and let M roll them all around through the paint. We started with two colors and four bouncy balls. We added more colors two at a time and eventually four more balls. I would suggest less paint or thicker paper because our paper was a bit wet and ended up folding over a few times. You could also tape the paper down. Since Halloween is coming, it would be fun to make spider webs this way with black paper and white paint. You could also use marbles instead of bouncy balls.

Here is the finished painting drying on a paper bag since the back got paint on it when it folded over.

This last one I only have a picture of the finished product. This one went fast and since I was doing most of the work, I didn't get pictures of the process. That's okay because these were pretty easy and I'm sure you can picture it in your head. I painted M's foot white and then stamped it on black paper. Once it dried we added eyes and cut them out. They are now hanging on the kitchen wall for all to enjoy! I would have liked to use goggly eyes but we didn't have any. As much as I would have loved to make a trip to Hobby Lobby, I decided it was not necessary.

So that is what we have been up to. Hopefully there will be more of these posts in the near future!

No theme this week

With the holiday this past weekend I didn't make it to the library. We may actually take a few weeks off because we just have a lot going on. As you can see, the first week started off great and then went down hill. That is because we had almost no other activities that first week. Then everything started, dance, soccer, plus http://kidsofdupage.blogspot.com/2011/06/wild-wednesday.html">Wild Wednesdays and http://kidsofdupage.blogspot.com/2011/06/kid-klub-at-york-center-park-district.html">Kid's Klub. Next week starts two weeks of swimming lessons for both kids which will take up basically the whole morning. Next week E is also starting a summer class for three weeks in the afternoon. So I may just pick a theme of books out and if we have time to do any other activities later in the afternoon, I will have a few planned out a head of time.

**Edit: I obviously did something wrong with the links up there. They don't look like I wanted them to but don't really have the time to fix them now. Anyway, they should still take you to the posts about Wild Wednesday and Kid's Klub in case you missed that post or want to see what is coming up.

Penguins

Last week we did penguins. Honestly, we didn't do as much as we could have but it was a crazy week. E had camp at the arboretum and then was sick on Wednesday and Thursday. I did get books about penguins. We also read the book Mr Popper's Penguins and then went to see the movie on Friday. Anyway, here is our book list for the week.

Penguins: Growing up Wild by Sandra Markle
Tacky the Penquin by Helen Lester
Penguins by Emily Rose Townsend
Penguins, Penguins everywhere by Bob Barner
A Penguin Chick Grows Up by Joan and Richard Hewett
Mr Popper's Penguins by Richard and Florence Atwater

Snow week reading list

I almost forgot to list the books we read for snow week!

Snowmen at night by Caralyn Buehner
There was a cold lady who swallowed some snow by Lucille Colandro
Hello Snow by Hope Vestergaard
Frozen Noses by Jan Carr
Snow Day by Scott Nash and Patricia Lakin
Winter Friends by Mary Quattlebaum
Snowmen all year by Caralyn Buehner

I really liked this batch of books. My favorites were Snowmen at night and snowmen all year and also snow day. I think E really liked the two snowmen books too. I also think it was more fun to read books about snow when there was none on the ground!

A week of winter!

Two weeks ago we had a snow storm! In June!

So we had a snowball fight!
Kicked the snow around a bit.
And made snow angels!
Later we made snow sculptures.

I bought a big bag of cotton balls, dumped them on the floor and let the kids go to town! Then I sat back and snapped pictures. I got some good practice in on my new camera! Don't worry, I got to throw some snowballs too! It was fun!

Trinity Academy of Irish Dance

Today I just wanted to help spread the word about this new dance studio and some events they have coming up later this month. If M were just a bit older and at a point where she would follow directions just a bit better, this would be a lot of fun to take her to. As for E, well he is going through a stage where he dislikes anything "girl." He looked at M's dance teacher like she was crazy when she suggested him taking a class for kids his age. Even after she told him that she has had boys in her classes. Anyway, I hope some of you are able to make it and would love to hear from you if you do!

So here is the information:

TRINITY ACADEMY OF IRISH DANCE ANNOUNCES OPENING OF

NEW STATE OF THE ART DANCE STUDIO IN ELMHURST

ELMHURST— After 30 years of success and being regarded as the most widely recognized Irish dance program in the world, Trinity Academy of Irish Dance is thrilled to announce the opening of a brand new state of the art dance studio in Elmhurst, Illinois located at 747 N. Church Road, Suite A3.

The new facility features two large dance studios as well as a parent and sibling waiting room. The new space serves not only as the location for weekly classes with Elmhurst-area locals, it is also the Illinois hub for special programs as well as advanced Trinity dancers from Illinois and Wisconsin who train for regional, national and international competition including the All Ireland Championships and the World Irish Dance Championships. Among these dancers are numerous world gold medal champions, fresh from the competition that was held this April in Dublin.

Trinity’s Founder and Artistic Director, Mark Howard, stated, “I can hardly believe that after 30 years of teaching in Illinois that we have our own studio in Elmhurst. The teachers and students of this remarkable organization deserve it. It’s been a long time coming and I am beyond excited to see what the future holds. I’m also excited to watch the kids walk in the door and see pieces of Trinity’s history and legacy on the walls.”

Trinity’s countless competitive titles, national and local television appearances and tours of the world demonstrate the power of the school, but the vast majority of the students just attend a weekly class, whether it be to connect to their Irish heritage or to express themselves through dance. With both sides of the coin at their fingertips, Trinity’s focus is set on elevating children and the world through the passion of Irish dance.

Howard continued, “We chose Elmhurst not just because it’s centrally located, but because of the people and the unique energy of the community. It’s really the perfect fit for our family-based organization.”

Trinity Studios Ribbon Cutting/ FREE Drop-in Day

To celebrate and welcome the community to the new space, they are inviting children and their families to their ribbon cutting/open house.

12 p.m. – 1:45 p.m. Friday, July 22, 2011 at Trinity’s Elmhurst Studios,

747 Church Road in Elmhurst

The ribbon cutting ceremony lasts from 12-1pm. During this time, children get to meet current Trinity dancers, watch them perform and see some fancy costumes! At 1pm, children get a free lesson in Irish dance where they can learn a step of the jig themselves!

If you represent a local business that would like to help sponsor this event, please send an email to info@trinitydance.com with the words “sponsor Elmhurst” in the subject line.

About Trinity
For 30 years, Trinity has thrilled audiences with its inspiring showmanship and been a flagship for dance programs worldwide. From humble beginnings in church basements to sold-out performance tours across Europe, Asia and North America, the Trinity dancers have consistently redefined the genre and elevated everyone who has seen them by sharing their undying energy, innovation and passion for the art form. Trinity was the birthplace of “progressive Irish dance,” which opened the artistic pathways that led directly to commercial shows like Riverdance.

In Trinity’s unique program, instructors focus on the importance of having fun while developing self-respect and confidence in their students. The Trinity program is held together by its powerful philosophy of empowerment that teaches students life lessons both on and off the dance floor. Trinity instructors utilize a noncompetitive teaching method that places children on a “journey” through Ireland, teaching the beauty of the dance form along with poise, agility, strength, confidence, sportsmanship and cultural lessons along the way.

While only five percent of Trinity dancers compete at the highest international levels, the great majority of students
learn solo and team dances to celebrate Celtic traditions and have fun performing around town and competing in smaller local competitions. The Trinity program allows dancers to take Irish dance at their own pace, giving them the choice to get as much or as little as they want out of it. Classes for team and performance dance are optional.

The
Trinity dancers have appeared in numerous feature films and on national television programs including The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and Jay Leno, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, CBS This Morning, The Today Show, Good Morning America and The Martha Stewart Show to name a few. Trinity has also won two Emmy Awards for appearances on PBS.

Trinity Academy of Irish Dance has a convenient location in Elmhurst, as well as Downers Grove, Elmhurst, Palatine, Western Springs and the Northwest Side (Irish American Heritage Center) and Lakeview neighborhoods of Chicago in Illinois; and numerous locations in Wisconsin. I'm behind I know

I planned on updating this weekend, I really did but I just never got to it. I could make excuses about having company over on Saturday and spending the day cleaning and baking or how Sunday was my birthday and how I spent Monday organizing (all true stories by the way) but the truth is, I still had time to blog I just didn't. I will work on catching up this week though. I have to because I know I won't have time next weekend.

Kid's Klub at York Center Park District

York Center Park District is located at 1609 S Luther Ave in Lombard. Every Thursday they have some lunchtime entertainment from 12-1. They also have a concession stand that opens at 11:30 although we have never checked that out. So if you plan on going, pack a lunch and maybe a picnic blanket (there are several tables) and sit back and enjoy the show while you eat your lunch. All shows are kid friendly and free! This week was the first week. We got to see a magic show preformed by John Measner.

After the show we stayed to play at the park for a bit.

Here are the rest of the upcoming shows:

Wild Wednesday!

Wild Wednesday is a great, free, activity! It takes place every Wednesday from June 15th- August 17th from 10-2 at Lake View Nature Center in Oakbrook. The address is 17 W 063 Hodges rd Oakbrook Terrace, IL 60181. It is right off Kingrey across from the Oakbrook mall. Parking in their lot is difficult because it is so small but you can park down the road and take a quick walk. You can't park on Hodges but if you pass the entrance and take either a left or a right at the stop sign onto Monterey Ave, you can park along that road. We did it this week and it's not too much of a walk and sooo much easier than trying to get out of their parking lot if it is full! I would suggest not even trying the parking lot unless you can clearly see an open spot or you drive a small vehicle!

Activities include:
Story time
Special animal visitor (different each week)
Scavenger hunt hike w/prizes
Lemonade (free) and popcorn ($1)
Fishing equipment available to borrow
Paddle boats
Nature center exhibits

They do story time at 10:15, 11:15, 12:15, and 1:15 and the animal presentation at 10:45, 11:45, 12:45, and 1:45.

Here is a list of the animal visitors that are scheduled for the rest of this summer:

6/22 Civet
6/29 Mouse
7/6 Hedgehog tenrec
7/13 Prairie dog
7/20 Blue-tongued skink
7/27 TBA (they told us this week but I forgot)
8/3 Tortoise
8/10 Bald eagle
8/17 Donkey

And now for pictures of our time there this week.

Story time

Getting the kids up and involved!

Getting to touch the legless lizard.

When we went inside the kids got to hold a walking stick bug!

Here is E taking a closer look of it climbing up his arm.

M got to hold it too. Once it started crawling up her arm I thought she was freaking out but she was actually giggling because it tickled!

Inside there was all sorts of things to see...

And touch...

And bury...

And find again.

Of course, no nature center is complete without stuffed animals!

We had a nice time but I will do a few things different next time, either go earlier or pack a lunch. We have soccer in the afternoon so we have to go to the earlier ones. This week I would like to go at 10 and also bring a lunch so we can stay longer. We may even rent a paddleboat (which is $3/half hour, $5 if you want the big swan boat). Another good thing to know is, they do this rain or shine! If it rains it is inside.

Magic week and book list

Magic week was not as elaborate as pirate week. It was hard to find things to go along with the theme. Plus we had a lot of other fun stuff going on throughout the week! Monday was spent at the park, Tuesday was full with dance class, a lunch playdate, and mygym. Wednesday we went to wild Wednesday (will do a separate post for that) and then soccer. Thursday we was the magic show at Kid's Klub (also a separate post). We were also supposed to have two playdates that afternoon but both canceled so we ended up at the park again. And Friday we spent the whole day (Friday's are short days for me) at the zoo! So basically all we did was read the books I got from the library and see a magic show. The kids were in a bit of a magic "mood" you could say and we were pretending to do magic tricks. I wish I would have read the up-close magic book that I got before the week started so that I could have attempted a few magic tricks for the kids but I was in Michigan the weekend before. Oh well, not all of the themes will be as full of ideas as some. What really matters is that the kids (and I) are enjoying the summer and not sitting around bored!

Anyway, here is the book list for magic week:
Polo and the Magician- Regis Faller
Polo and the Magic Flute- Regis Faller
Close-Up Magic- Nicholas Einhorn
Chavela and the Magic Bubble- Monica Brown

This coming week we are doing winter! Yup, we will be talking about winter right at the beginning of summer! Some of the activities that I have planned to go along with it seem like they may be good warm weather activities such as making ice sculptures out of ice cubes. What a great way to cool down! We will also be having a snowball fight! And just like it's never too cold for ice cream, it's never too hot for hot chocolate!

We will also be starting to read the book Mr. Popper's penguins. Two chapters a day means we should finish next Friday and then we can go see the movie! I can't wait to read this book. It is one of the few that sticks out in my head from when I was in grade school.

Treasure chests and a treasure hunt

Yesterday the kids decorated their treasure chests. It was a fairly easy project. I took two shoe boxes that had lids that flipped open and covered it in white butcher block paper.

Then I looked up pictures of treasure chests on google to let the kids get an idea of what they wanted their chests to look like. They got their ideas and this is what they came up with.

Not exactly what I thought but at least it was all their ideas.

For the treasure hunt, I went to the store and bought a few items to put in their boxes. I hit up Target's dollar spot and found some books. I also found some pirate stickers in the party section. I wanted to find some eye patches, chocolate coins, and candy necklaces. I settled on ring pops, goldfish, pirates booty, and Hershey nuggets because they were in gold and silver wrappers.

To make the kids have to hunt for their chests, I first hid the boxes. Then I cut out 8 strips of paper. I wrote clues on them and placed them around the house. The first clue I had and each clue after would lead to the next clue until finally it would lead to the treasure chests. Some examples of clues I used were "for the first clue, look by the glue" "go downstairs and look by the chair" "M's kitchen would like to pitch in" and the last one said "you sure are a clever fellow now go look in the bathroom painted yellow". They had fun but found them within about five minutes! M thought that pirates actually came to her house and brought the treasure. I didn't tell her that, she came up with it all on her own!

This afternoon we went to a friend's birthday party and they had a magician! It was perfect because next week is magic week! What a great way to get them excited for next week! That was not planned either! We are actually going (hoping to go if the weather is nice) to see a magic show at Kid's Klub next week. I wonder if it will be the same guy. I also need to remember to do a post on Kids Klub later when I'm on an actual computer!

Pirate book list

Here is the list of books we are reading this week:
Do Pirates Take Baths?- Kathy Tucker
How I Became A Pirate- Melinda Long
Pirates Don't Change Diapers- Melinda Long
Bubble Bath Pirates- Jarrett J. Krosoczka
I Love My Pirate Papa- Laura Leuck
Pirate Pete- Kim Kennedy
The Night Pirates- Peter Harris

They were all really good books. The kids and I read them all in one sitting. That was really all we did with the pirate theme yesterday. The kids did color some more pirate pictures and E did a few connect the dots, a pirate ship and a treasure chest.

Next we are making pirate treasure chests and spotting telescopes. On Friday we are having a treasure hunt!

Pirate week: day 1

I can't guarantee that I will actually post each day of the week all summer but for now I find it easier if I use my phone for pictures and posts.

So here is what we did for our first day of pirate week:

This morning during homework time E and I worked on a maze to help the pirate find the treasure chest. They also colored a treasure map.

This was lunch (or part of it). Pirates gold, swords and cannonballs (grapes which were not pictured). They had fun protecting their gold by using their swords and cannonballs. Luckily, it did not get out of control and no food was thrown! Always a bonus!

After lunch M put on her pirate costume and the kids played pirates. Later in the afternoon, while we were playing, the kids were really loud. I told them that they sounded like parrots and pirates always have parrots as pets. For snack they had a parrot snack of crackers and apples.

Tonight I am getting books from the library to go along with our theme so I will be sure to post our reading list for this week.

In other news, we are working on potty training M for the second time. The first time I think was a bit too early. I thought she was ready but once we started it was clear she wasn't. This time is going much better! She did have an accident at the park this morning. Maybe we shouldn't have stayed as long as we did. However, this afternoon was great, three successful trips to the potty! That is a huge improvement from last time when we had zero in three days.

This weeks theme: Pirates

We are doing pirates this week! I found some printable activities and coloring pages for free online. We will also make treasure chests out of shoe boxes and have a treasure hunt. I'm thinking I might hide their treasure chests with a few little prizes inside for them to find. For snacks we will have pirate swords made with carrot sticks and cucumber and pirates on a ship (instead of ants on a log). I also have plans to have them make spyglass telescopes out of paper towel rolls and hats out of newspaper. However, I found last summer, we didn't get to a lot of the crafts that I had planned because the kids were more interested in being outside. That is totally fine with me! Maybe this year I can plan to do the crafts outside on the back porch. I also have a list of books picked out but because it was too late last night, I haven't had a chance to get to the library. I usually have the books ready to bring with me on Monday morning. But I could also take the kids and have them help me pick out books.

Summer starts tomorrow

I just wanted to let everyone (if anyone still reads this) know that I haven't forgot about this blog! This school year was a busy time and not much happened worth posting that hasn't been posted about before. E had his last day of school on Friday so I guess that makes tomorrow the first official day of summer vacation! I have been busy planning out our theme weeks tonight. I'm not done but I at least have 12 themes picked out. Whether we use them all or not, I don't know yet. As I found last summer, you can plan everything out in advance but things will have to change! There may be weeks (like the weeks that the kids have swimming lessons or when E has camp at the arb) that we just can't fit anything extra into! Anyway, I wanted to share the themes with everyone in case you need some ideas of things to do with the kids this summer. I will go into more detail later and of course, report back at the end of the week (or a month later hehe) with pictures!

Cooking/food
Camping
Ocean (never got to that one last summer, or didn't do much with it. Can't remember)
Music
Science
Pirates
Rainforest (also never got to that one last summer)
Winter/ice (thought it might be a nice way to beat the heat)
Photography
Back to school (for the week before school. Thought this would be a good summer to do this since M starts preschool in the fall. Yikes!)
Penguins (with a trip to see Mr poppers penguins and maybe read the book in the weeks leading up to it)
Magic

Obviously these are not in order. I'm trying to plan them around certain activities going on this summer such as a magic show at Kid's Klub on June 16th. If you are in the area and want to know more about that just let me know.

I'm hoping to do a post soon that goes into more detail about what we are doing for each theme, but I can't promise anything! I really wish there was more time in a weekend or even an evening so I can do all of these extra things I take on and still have time to take care of my apartment/relax/spend time with my husband. Oh yeah, for those that don't personally know me, I got married last month! Another reason for neglecting this blog. Anyway, like always, I love reading comments so let me know what you think! Send me questions, ideas, anything! If there is something you would like to see more of (or less of) just let me know! And pass this on to others! I would love to get more readers this summer! It would give me more incentive to keep writing! Comments will also give me incentive!

ABC book update

I just wanted to show pictures of the pages of the book so far. I'm not sure M is remembering the letters but she is having fun making the book and enjoys going back and looking at her work. We are going to keep working on the book but I am thinking up other ways to teach her the letters. One of them is in the oven right now but that is for another post. So here are the pages so far.

Notice we had a hard time finding pictures of things starting with A.

Also notice that she is coloring more than just a few scribbles like at the beginning.

ABC book

I'm working on getting M to learn her ABC's. I tried once before and it didn't seem to click so I am trying again. This time I came up with the idea of making an ABC book with her. She loves to sit and read books so now she can enjoy one that she helped make!

First, I got an 8x8 scrapbook. Then I put my scrapbook paper (that is just sitting in the closet) to good use. I made pages for each letter of the alphabet (see picture below). On the next page I had M glue some letter A's that she cut from magazines. Not only was she working on her letters here but she was practicing her cutting and glueing! For the next page I had her color some letter A themed pictures. We also talked about the sound that A makes and how we can hear it in the beginning of the word.

Tomorrow we will cut out pictures of things that start with A for the next page.

We are spending a week on each letter. After a few weeks (maybe 5) we will spend a week doing review for each letter. During that week we will get to make letters out of clay, bake them and paint them. Stay tuned for that post!

Sorry for the lack of blogging lately! It has been busy both at work and home. The kids are in a ton of activities and we have not had time to visit new places recently. In my down time, I am planning my wedding and working out so I can look good in my wedding dress ;)

Also, for you iPhone users out there, there is a free app called ABC free. I have been letting M play it once in a while. It is basically like talking flash cards. When you tap the screen it will say the name of the letter and then say something like "A is for apple." The kids are really into games in the iPhone and iPad lately but they don't really get to play on my phone. One day I decided to let her play that game but told her that was the only game on there she could play, if she didn't want that one we could turn it off. I really don't want to have both of them begging to play all the time. Also the reason my iPad never comes to work with me! So glad theirs goes to work with dad!
